About Us
Elson & Company was founded in 1997 by Diane Elson Bankoff, who envisioned creating timeless, hand-knotted Tibetan carpets that honor tradition while embracing fresh, innovative design.
A post-college trip to Nepal and southern Tibet led to a lifelong connection to the artistry of hand-knotted carpets. Initially interested in bringing something home as a memory, Diane became fascinated by the artistry and old-fashioned, detail-oriented craftsmanship that went into hand-knotted Tibetan rugs.
At the time, the mills were producing very traditional patterns. Moved by the quiet elegance of the weavers’ work, the history of their process, and the integrity woven into every piece, she sent paint chips back to Kathmandu, along with sketches and watercolors. The artisans created a new interpretation of their craft, blending the linear simplicity of Scandinavian design with modern aesthetics, the hand-knotted process's richness, and the Himalayan wool's complex luster.
